  1. Think in the terms of Value Innovation. Kim and Mauborgne: 
    • Don’t think of increasing your value with just little things which just “fine-tunes” what you are offering. Produce value
      1. Jack Lalanne saw the value of providing a service that would improve the lives of these who follow him. He didn’t just focus on the need to exercise but the desire for people to lead happier lives.
      2. In other words, it wasn’t about HIM, but about YOU.
    • Don’t innovate without presenting value. As Kim and Mauborgne say, “Many times companies will innovate but only amount to laying the eggs that other companies hatch.”
  2. Break down market boundaries
    • Don’t limit yourself to the logical marketplace for your business or your personal skills.
      • Jack Lalanne just didn’t focus on opening a gym, which many copied, but a holistic approach to fitness
        1. Wrote and spoke of the proper diet this competing with any health food industry, if there was one in the early days.
      • His application enhanced his reach
        1. Using a TV to extend the personal relationship.
        2. Picking a time of day when “home-makers” were able to view him.

        1. Shift your focus from your competitors to alternatives of providing for your customers or potential employees.
        2. Jack Lalane didn’t imitate boxing gyms or workout studios by making the next best gym.
      • Try to consider ALL of your personal skills, or Business skills even if they seem irrelevant at first.
        1. Jack Lalanne made the personality of a motivational speaker a requirement for future trainers.
        2. Where many trainers would see their increased age as a detriment, he constantly used himself as an example as he aged by doing extraordinary feats.
